・One of the Essential Treatments in Ayurveda: "Shirodhara"

Before introducing Shirodhara, let me briefly touch on Ayurveda, a holistic system of medicine with a history spanning over 5,000 years.In Sanskrit, "Ayur" means "life," and "Veda" means "knowledge" or "truth." Ayurveda, therefore, translates as "the knowledge of life"—a guide to living better and more harmoniously. It is considered the root of both Eastern and Western medicine, and in Sri Lanka, doctors still use Ayurvedic methods for treatment. The World Health Organization (WHO) also recognizes Ayurveda as an effective form of preventive care.Ayurveda teaches that each individual is inherently connected to nature and the universe. One person’s health is linked to the well-being of all; likewise, one person’s illness can affect the whole.Shirodhara is one of the core treatments that embodies Ayurveda’s deep philosophy and ancient wisdom. The word "Shirodhara" comes from Sanskrit: "Shiro" means "head," and "Dhara" means "flow."

In this treatment, warm oil is gently and continuously poured onto the center of the forehead—often referred to as the "third eye"—for approximately 20 minutes. By maintaining a steady flow, both in quantity and temperature (about body temperature), Shirodhara guides you into a meditative state.

It creates a unique condition where the mind remains awake while the body feels as though it is asleep, allowing you to experience profound mental relaxation and comfort.

Some people with high levels of tension, anxiety, or mental resistance may need several sessions before they can fully relax. However, with repeated treatments, even these individuals often find themselves entering this deeply calming state.

シロダーラを語る上で欠かせない、5000年の歴史を誇るアーユルヴェーダについて少し触れたいと思います。

アーユルヴェーダとはサンスクリット語で「アーユル」＝「生命」、「ヴェーダ」＝「真理」という意味の言葉で、「生命の真理＝より良く生きる方法」としてインドで誕生しました。西洋医学や東洋医学のルーツでもあり、スリランカでは医師が患者にアーユルヴェーダの知識と手法で治療することもあります。ＷＨＯ世界保健機構でも予防ケアとして認可されています。

アーユルヴェーダは人間ひとりひとりが自然とつながり、宇宙ともつながっていると考えています。一人の健康が全てにつながり、一人の病が全てにつながるとも言えるでしょう。

「シロダーラ」は、そのような深い哲学と古い歴史を持つアーユルヴェーダ真髄のメニューのひとつです。サンスクリット語で「シロ」＝「頭」、「ダーラ」＝「流れ」を意味し、その名が示す通り第三の目（チャクラ）呼ばれる額の中心部分に20分間オイルを流し続けるトリートメントです。

一定量、一定温度（体温と同じくらい）のオイルを垂らし続けることで、一種の瞑想状態へと導きます。意識はあるのに体は眠っている状態になり、実に不思議な感覚で非常に心地よい精神的なリラクゼーションを体感して頂けます。稀に緊張や不安の強い方、頑固な方などなかなか深い感覚を体験することができない方もいらっしゃいますが、何度か経験されるうちに精神的リラクゼーションを体感されるされるようになります。

・Why do we need Shirodhara?

Shirodhara brings balance to the body which helps a person regain their health and wellness. Have you ever felt any of these?
